What
is vermeil?
Vermeil
is sterling silver plated in precious metal - platinum or gold. Gold vermeil
is the most common vermeil used and high quality gold vermeil will use 18k gold
plating. The gold-plating used in vermeil is thicker than the plating put over
base metals.
Vermeil
is an excellent jewellery material because it combines two precious metals - gold
(or sometimes platinum) and silver and because the gold plating is thicker than
normal.
The resulting jewellery has the look of 18k gold, is both affordable and precious
and is more tarnish-proof than sterling silver or base metal gold plate.
Caring
for vermeil jewellery
Vermeil
jewellery is much more tarnish-proof than sterling silver and should not tarnish
easily. However, like all silver and karat gold jewellery, care should be taken
not to expose your vermeil jewellery to corrosive substances or soaps that increase
the chance of a chemical reaction.
Vermeil
jewellery should be stored in so that it cannot be scratched or damaged by other
pieces. To clean vermeil jewellery, polish it with a soft cloth. Do not use silver
cleaners or abbrasives.
